The Boulevardier is the perfect blend of American Prohibition heritage and Parisian elegance. An unusual combination? Perhaps. But that's precisely what makes this cocktail so fascinating.
During Prohibition, many bartenders sought their fortunes in Europe – including New Yorker Harry McElhone. At his Harry's New York Bar in Paris, he served classic pre-Prohibition drinks and created new masterpieces. One of these creations became the Boulevardier, which became the signature drink of an influential regular – the editor of the eponymous magazine The Boulevardier.
This cocktail combines the depth of bourbon with the subtle bitterness of an Italian bitters liqueur and the sweet spice of red vermouth. Served in a chilled tumbler and garnished with orange zest, it unfolds its full elegance and intensity.
